If you want to collect Jasper Johns' paintings it helps if you wrote Jurassic Park, or created E.R., fortunately Johns' printmaking and sense of play means there is a wide range of work by Johns and his contemporaries that are (that worst of all words) affordable.

Jasper Johns emerged as major force in the American art scene when the contemporary arts community was seeking a way to move beyond the pure emotion of Abstract Expressionism. The simplicity and familiarity of the subject matter generated interest in Johns' motivation and his process. Johns explains, ''There may or may not be an idea, and the meaning may just be that the work exists.''

It was Johns' interest in process led him to printmaking. For Johns, printmaking was a medium that encouraged experimentation through the ease with which it allowed for repeat endeavors. Often he would make counterpart prints to his paintings. He says, ''My experience of life is that it's very fragmented; certain kinds of things happen, and in another place, a different kind of thing occurs. I would like my work to have some vivid indication of those differences.'' His innovations in screen-printing, lithography, and etching have revolutionized the field.

Collaboration was an important part in advancing Johns' own art, and he worked regularly with a number of other artists. While working together creating window displays for Tiffany's, Johns and Robert Raushenberg explored the New York art scene, meeting not only artists such as Cy Twombly and Bruce Nauman, but also the composer John Cage and the choreographer Merce Cunningham.

This exhibition will show a range of prints, artists' posters and artists' books. It will also feature ephemera and performance videos that are intended to give the visitor an insight and appreciation of the range of John's work and the importance of his collaborations.

While there are many Events, Openings and Receptions taking place at this time of year, this wonderful little exhibition is worth visiting.

Since the late 60's, Mail Art has represented an egalitarian and democratic approach to Art, and with that in mind A&D Gallery asked established and emerging artists throughout the world to contribute work for their first "ANNUAL MAIL ART EXHIBITION" to benefit Teenage Cancer Trust.

The response has exceeded all expectations with work being donated by artists from: Germany, Australia, Japan, Korea, U.S.A., Switzerland, France, Spain, Sweden, Greece and U.K.
In addition we are delighted to announce the involvement of artists including: Dan Graham, Andrew Logan, Stuart Semple, Billy Name, Lee Maelzer, Anthony Ausgang, Brett Ewins and Zandra Rhodes.

Because the aim of the project is to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust, all works are priced to sell with a "best offer" element to ensure that everything sells by closing time on the 22nd October

You probably already know the great work carried out by the Teenage Cancer Trust. They have a new Cancer Centre at University College London Hospital and we are hoping to help equip it.

Our exhibition is really a tribute to Ray Johnson, the Father of Mail / Correspondence Art.

We have had tremendous support from artists from many countries including: U.S.A., Germany, Korea, Spain and Australia.

In addition we are delighted to announce the involvement of leading artists including: Billy Name, Andrew Logan and Dan Graham.

All work has been donated by the artists and the space has been donated by the A&D Gallery.

A&D Gallery June Exhibition

A&D GALLERY Summer Sale 2nd June to 8th July

In June, A&D Gallery (Marylebone) will break with tradition
and replace their "Summer Show" with a Fund raising
"Summer Sale". Profits will go to The Prince's Foundation
for Children & the Arts, and to various projects via the
Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation.

Work on offer includes signed Prints, and Posters from
Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Peter Blake, Gilbert and George,
Shepard Fairey, and Sam Francis, plus original pieces from
the Gallery's collection.

Prices will be typically discounted by 20 to 50%, so we hope
people will take the opportunity to get a bargain while supporting
worthwhile causes.

A&D Gallery are announcing the first exhibition of all six of the
famous S.M.S. portfolios in their original format.

S.M.S. published in 1968 by William Copley, was a short lived collaboration between
some of the most important artists of the 20th century, including: Marcel Duchamp,
Roy Lichtenstein, Man Ray, Ray Johnson, Claes Oldenberg, John Cage,and Yoko Ono.

We are very excited to be showing works by the Swedish artist, Robert Hilmersson, in November & December.

Hilmersson has an astonishingly mature and sophisticated approach to what has become known as "Urban Art". Where Street Art is at its most subversive in the street, and can appear castrated when confined to a frame
on a gallery wall, Hilmersson's work is at its most effective in a traditional environment, demanding attention for
what is on, and beneath the surface.

He uses illustration, collage, oilstick & paint to produce original works on canvas that are both engaging
and provocative.

While an original talent, Hilmersson's multi-layer construction is reminiscent of Robert Rauschenberg and
Jeff Koons, while the stencil ‘benday’ dots appear to, wittily, reference both Lichtenstein and Banksy.

The paintings in the exhibition are all 80 cms square and we are hoping to have 10 available for sale.

Apart from exhibitions in his native Sweden, (Stockholm and Gothenburg), Hilmersson has shown in France,
Belgium, Hungary, Spain and the USA.

This will be his first U.K. exhibition.

When you first meet Peter Jones, or his alter ego Rita Says, you realize that he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the avant-garde and that his work embraces the language of Dada and Arte Povera in equal measures.

His Art and Music performances have raised his profile over recent years, but he has now decided to return to A&D Gallery with a very short exhibition of sculpture and one Gallery window performance.

The sculptures are a progression from works shown in Jones’ previous exhibition at the gallery. Constructed from saw blades and knives, they add intimidation and danger to a purity of line. The cross reference between the metallic edge and the organic shapes they create enhance the conflict that is inherent in the artist’s vision.

For Jones, the work is a response to perceived alienation and gender & trans-gender politics, for the viewer, the tension and fragile boundaries created by the sculpture convey a universal emotion that transcends any original motivation. When Jones had his first exhibition at A&D, the gallery staff was concerned that the concepts represented would be elitist and off putting to those not immersed in contemporary art. The opposite was true, the gallery drew visitors from all walks of life, each with their unique appreciation of the work on display. Far from undermining the gallery’s ethos of accessibility, the exhibition confirmed that the public is more than capable of using its own judgment.

Jones' performance will take place (in a closed gallery) viewable from the street at 51 Chiltern Street, London W1 on Friday 15th October at 8.30pm.

LITTLE WONDER
In this exhibition, featuring works by many of the major innovators
in contemporary art, the single unifying aspect is the diminutive size of the work.

A&D Gallery have selected works by artists including, David Hockney, Julan Opie,
and Andy Warhol, which they believe interact in a very personal and approachable way.

Perhaps the key piece in the exhibition is a small linocut by Jasper Johns, his first
work in this medium, and limited to 26 pieces, most of which are in Museums or National
Galleries. Not all the pieces are that rarified, the exhibition displays a wide range of original
works, multiples, and ephemera and is intended to inform and delight.

Reasons to be cheerful: Sir Peter Blake

A&D Gallery are hosting the launch of Peter Blake's largest ever print on Tin
I LOVE LONDON. It is 62 cms x 81 cms and is a very limited edition of 75.

In addition the Gallery is mounting an exhibition from the Pitea Museum in
Sweden of Peter Blake's Record Covers. While most are aware of the Sgt Pepper sleeve
and perhaps the LIVE AID single, there are many more gems including work for Oasis,
Roger McGough and Paul Weller,
