Sculptor & Performance Artist: Claes Oldenburg, (January 28,1929).
Swedish born American artist Claes Oldenburg is a sculptor, best known for his public art installations typically featuring large versions of everyday objects such as typewriters, lipstick and flashlights. By presenting these objects out of context and in such colossal proportions, Oldenburg forces viewers to reassess their daily lives and values. His work is a social commentary on American popular culture and by association, on contemporary society's approach to life itself.
He studied at Yale University and the Art Institute of Chicago. His first New York exhibition was in 1958 at Red Grooms' City Gallery, when a selection of his drawings was included in a group show, the following year he had his first solo show at the Judson Gallery in New York which featured a selection of drawings and sculptures.
