Painter, Sculptor, Graphic Artist & Designer: Larry Rivers, (17 Aug. 1923 - 14 Aug. 2002).
Established as one of America's most important postwar artists, Larry Rivers was born, Yitzhok Loiza Grossberg in 1923 in the Bronx, New York. In 1940 he began a musical career as a jazz saxophonist and changed his name to Larry Rivers after being introduced as "Larry Rivers and the Mudcats" at a local New York City pub.
Rivers took up painting in 1945 and studied at the Hans Hofmann School from 1947-48, and then at New York University, where he studied under Baziotes (leading American Abstract Expressionist), graduating in 1951.
Many scholars consider Rivers to be the Godfather of Pop art.
