Dante's Inferno - Canto I

Dante's Inferno - Canto I

Product Information

Size: 36.8 x 29.2 cm  (14 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches)

Rauschenberg establishes his symbolic key, his spaces, his subterranean light.

The ravening she-wolf, a ghostly white bitch in Rauschenberg's illustration, stands obdurately between Dante and the dawn (salvation).

The dark wood of error becomes a forest of industrial cranes, a wilderness in which a man can lose his way.

This print is from the 'Deluxe Portfolio' produced in an edition of 300 of which this comes from #122,  published by Harry N. Abrams in 1965.

Lithograph created directly from the original drawings, illustrating each canto of Dante Alighieri's Inferno, which occupied the artist from 1959 -1960.
